3" Economy Organic Cotton Futon Mattress

• What's the difference between our Economy and Luxury Organic Futons??
  
  Our 3" Economy Organic Cotton Futons are certified organic, pure, and as functional as our Euro-Luxury 6" Organic Cotton Futons. The difference is in the materials, construction, craftsmanship, and the price. The luxury grade features a much more luxurious and durable fabric cover, better carding, tufting, & quilting of the batting inside the cover, substantially thicker mattress, and all-in-all higher grade raw materials (in fact, the Luxury futons are made from the highest quality organic materials available, so matching up to their quality is a tall order for any futon, not just our Economy Organic Futon).
  
  The Economy Organic Futon, on the other hand, features a lighter and not as tight muslin fabric and constructed for a shorter time span of use (5–7 years, often a lot longer with proper care) than the Luxury Futons, which, with proper care, may last you 12-18 years at least. That said, the 3" Economy futons are as functional and as pure as the Luxury futons and offered at a much lower price, good for a starter organic futon, a spare organic futon for guests, or the futon couch. They are also somewhat easier to store rolled up in a closet when not in use.
  
  The Economy Organic Cotton and/or Wool Futons are constructed most like an authentic Japanese futon...with a decidedly eco-friendly twist: they are made from your choice of 100% organic cotton cover & fill, or 100% organic cotton cover with 100% pure wool fill. In Japan, futons are traditionally made in 3" thickness from cotton batting and kept rolled up in the closet during the day & rolled out right on the tatami floor at night to sleep on. This makes for an efficient use of living space (which is precious in most of Japan) and makes airing, sunning, moving, and storage very simple. We have ourselves found the 3" thickness to be ideal for sleeping right on the floor .
  
  Please note: a prescription note from a chiropractor or an MD needed for 100% organic cotton futon. Otherwise, there will be a top and bottom layer of PureGro wool to meet federal fire retardant regulations.

We will email Canadian customers after an order is placed regarding ground shipping charges (usually between $40 – $100) and any applicable brokerage fees (this item is shipped from a US warehouse — our Euro-Luxury items ship from a Canadian warehouse, so there are no brokerage fees for them).

Customers preferring a thicker mattress for slatted futon frames or bed frames will do well with piling two 3" futons on top of each other (one 3" futon alone is only suitable for the floor or the platform bed and not suitable for slatted frames), making for a thick and cozy 6" mattress which is still easy to air & sun (very important for keeping the futon fresh and clean) and economical to transport and store. Many of our customers get one 3" organic cotton or hemp futon and one 3" pure wool futon to get two kinds of support (organic cotton on top makes for a firm mattress, whereas wool on top makes for a plusher one). A mattress topper or mattress pad can be added on top of one or two futons for extra fluffiness. Alternatively, you may also go with our 6" Euro-Luxury Organic Cotton Futons, which are also perfect for use as a regular mattress on more conventional bed frames and slats.

Natural bedding materials (hemp, organic cotton, wool) are breathable and keep air circulating freely at all times, keeping you cozy and warm on chilly nights and cool on balmy nights. They are also indispensable for people with chemical sensitivity and allergies.

Organic cotton and Hemp:

• Settle down over time, providing a firm but "giving" support. The materials of choice for traditional Japanese futons and vegans everywhere. Ideal for layering and also as a stand-alone 3" futon on the floor as well as on the traditional Japanese tatami mat floor or solid platform beds. Great for comforter filling too. The best natural materials for bedding (there is no outgassing as there is with conventional cotton & synthetic bedding materials or even "natural" latex). 100% hemp batting especially makes for a wonderful comforter filling as its breathability and insulating qualities keep you very warm and cozy in the winter and cool in the summer.

Pure wool:

• Fluffy and full of loft. Ideal as a top layer but probably too soft for most people as a stand-alone 3" futon. Excellent material for comforter filling. Cruelty-free wool.
