Euro-Luxury Natural Latex
Rubber Mattress & Foundation

  • natural rubber mattress
  • Natural latex mattress
  • Natural rubber processing
  • natural rubber mattress

Rawganique.com offers 6" Natural Rubber Mattress and 6+2" Natural Rubber Mattress, (which is the 6" mattress with a built-in 2" Natural Rubber Topper, both enclosed inside a zippered quilted organic cotton cover). Two firmness options are available. Organic Texel wool is quilted into the organic cotton casing for fire retardancy and additional softness. Our natural rubber is made using the Dunlop method, which in our opinion is the purest processing method know. Made in Canada. Sweatshop-free. More info below.

In the 11 years of offering our Natural Rubber Mattresses that are as pure and sustainable as can be, we have had heart-warming feedback from our customers, who have come back to buy more. Dear customers, we are grateful for your support and glowing word-of-mouth recommendations to family and friends over the years. Namaste.

NOTE: Our natural rubber mattress (in fact, our whole bedding line) is NOT sprayed with chemical fire retardants. Our 100% natural products meet US regulation 16-CFR part 16-33 standard approved 4D for flammability. Many customers have brought it to our attention that this is in fact not the case with most, if not all, domestic as well as imported bedding products, organic or not.

» How are your natural rubber mattresses different?

They are made using the Dunlop method, which yields a 97% purity (the other 3% is zinc oxide), the highest of any methods known. The milk from the rubber tree is processed fresh (so no harsh chemicals have to be used to reconstitute, as opposed to volume manufacturers that let the milk sit who will then be required to use industrial chemicals to process it later). Once processed, the natural rubber used in our non-toxic organic bedding is overnighted to Canada to be made into our pure natural rubber mattress.

Dunlop Method VS talaylay method: Many customers inquire about the difference between these two methods of production. For starters, the Dunlop method is superior in purity because the milk of the rubber tree is processed fresh upon harvest, turned into natural rubber on location, and then shipped express to Canada to be cut and made into pillows, toppers, and mattresses. The talaylay method usually requires flash freezing or drying of the rubber into mats, which then have to be reconstituted more often than not with chemical means and steaming before being turned into natural rubber.

At Rawganique, we are lucky to be able to source the finest quality raw rubber milk fresh in southern Thailand and Malaysia. These two regions are connected to each other to form a unique climate zone that is ideal for the best quality rubber milk in the world and yields premium quality natural rubber products that last longer and stay resilient longer.

Because there are fewer steps involved in the production, natural rubber mattresses made with the Dunlop method cost far less than those obtained from the more labor-intensive (and more often than not chemical-intensive) talaylay method.

No chemical fire retardants or formaldehyde were applied to our natural rubber mattresses (the natural rubber is not highly flammable like cotton), whereas we have heard of some natural rubber mattresses having silicone or other substances applied to them.

Our natural rubber mattresses are encased in 100% certified organic cotton fabric with organically grown Texel wool quilted in for fire retardancy regulations (in lieu chemical fire retardants).

Our natural rubber products were never fumigated at any stage of production or transportation.

The difference between medium and firm option in our natural rubber mattresses lies in the dense-ness of the 6" core base. It has nothing to do with the cotton/wool topper.

» What are the specs of your natural rubber mattress?

The cover is made from certified organic cotton fabric that's soft and tightly woven so no dust mites can go through. For additional protection, we recommend placing your new natural rubber mattress inside our Organic Cotton Mattress Barrier Cloth.

» What are the features and differences between your 6" and 6+2" natural rubber mattresses?

6" Natural Rubber Mattress:

* The 6" natural rubber mattress is encased in organic cotton cover.
* The organic cotton cover is not removable.
* Organically grown wool is quilted into the organic cotton cover to meet fire retardancy regulations without having to resort to chemicals.
* Choice of Medium Soft (feels like cotton & wool combo) or Firm (feels like cotton)

6+2"Natural Rubber Mattress:

* A 2" medium soft natural rubber topper sits atop a 6" natural rubber mattress (choice of Medium Soft or Firm on the 6" mattress).
* Both the 6" natural latex mattress and 2" natural latex topper are encased inside a removable zippered organic cotton cover.
* The cover which is zippered on three sides can be removed for washing.
* Organically grown wool is quilted into the organic cotton cover to meet fire retardancy regulations.
* You may still wish to use our organic cotton mattress barrier cover for protection, easy maintenance, and easy washing.

natural rubber latex mattresses and box springs

» How are natural rubber mattresses different from, say, organic cotton mattresses?

The beauty of natural rubber mattresses is that they both support and absorb your weight, without the bounce that characterizes spring mattresses. Your partner won't feel it if you toss and turn on your side of the bed, because the natural rubber evenly absorbs the "disturbance". It's provides a slightly gentler sleeping surface than organic cotton, which packs down over time into a firm sleeping surface. Which you choose is a matter of personal preference. Our organic cotton futons and spring mattresses still outsell our natural rubber mattresses by a slight margin, but that may be because organic cotton mattresses have been around longer and hence more familiar.

» How long does it take for me to get the natural rubber mattress from the date of the order?

Our natural rubber mattresses are made to order. It usually takes 2 weeks to produce, plus transit time depending on where the mattress is being shipped. Production starts as soon as you place the order and your card is also charged at time of order as this is a custom order. Express shipping method will put your order ahead of Economic shipping queue (saving you a few days of wait time) but the shipping method is the same ground freight. This product is not refundable due to reasons of hygiene and prohibitive shipping costs. More info, tidbits, and photos further down the page.

» Do you offer different firmnesses in your natural rubber mattresses?

Yes. The default is medium soft.

Firm costs $50 more for 6" natural rubber mattress and $60 more for 6+2" natural rubber mattress.

» What is the mattress foundation and do I need it?

Foundation = 2" wooden slats alternating with 2" gaps for optimal air circulation. The frame is covered by heavy duty organic cotton fabric. Default height is 7.5". If you wish, you may request 4.5" high foundation in the "Comments/Suggestions" box at checkout.

The mattress foundation is optional. To properly care for your mattress, it is important that there is good air circulation around it. The mattress foundation is meant to be just that: the wooden slats facilitate optimal airflow. But you may also opt to put it on another slatted surface (or solid surface like a platform bed or on the floor if your room is dry: be sure to rotate your mattress periodically).

» Tell me more about the free shipping offer.

Our natural rubber mattresses are eligible for free shipping to most points in Canada and the 48 contiguous states in the US (2-4 weeks to delivery) — freight to Hawaii, Alaska, NWT, Yukon, and other remote points will be quoted after you place your order for your approval.

» How do I care for the natural rubber mattress?

Care instructions:

  • Turn and rotate your organic mattress every 8 weeks using the handy handles on the sides of the mattress.
  • Place your organic mattress on a box spring or slat or solid foundation
  • Do not carry the mattress using the handles -- carry it flat or on its side.
  • Do not allow your organic mattress to get wet.
  • For stains, use a non-toxic spot cleaner.
  • Protect your mattress with our Euro-Luxury Organic Cotton Mattress Barrier Cloth Cover.

Please note: please be aware that our organic cotton & wool innerspring mattresses and box springs are not returnable due to reasons of hygiene. Sleeptek/Greensleep (who custom-manufactures our organic pillows for us) is an internationally recognized manufacturer of luxury organic bedding and bath products, so on top of the Rawganique.com name that our customers have come to associate with integrity and quality, there is the long history and reliability of the Sleeptek brand name (you may have slept on their organic pillows if you've stayed in one of the famous *green* hotels worldwide, which have unanimously opted for their organic pillows).

If you are not sure or are very particular about the texture of fabrics, etc.., then we recommend that you find bedding and bath products in your local stores rather than buying them online as they are not returnable. We can assure you that our products are as pure, luxurious, and sustainable as can be and that, coming from us, is no small claim. We've looked everywhere for the very best products and settle for a manufacturer that meets our strict criteria of sustainability, fair labor standards, zero cruelty to animals, non-exploitation of workers, environmental conservation, and purity. Thank you for your understanding.

» Here's the long text description of our natural rubber mattress:

Most of our customers look for organic cotton and/or organic wool mattresses, and we offer both the futon-style and coil-style mattresses made from organic cotton and/or organic wool. Some customers, however, prefer the molding ability of natural rubber, and so we offer our Euro-Luxury Natural Rubber Mattress specifically for this purpose.

We tried sleeping on one of our natural latex mattresses recently, and we were impressed by the comfort and the well-rested feeling the morning after. It felt as if we were suspended on a firm and springy surface; it satisfied our needs for a firm sleeping surface—the mattress resisted our weight beautifully and offered up a resilient cozy comfort unparalleled by other types of mattresses we've tried. We're hooked on the natural rubber mattress now and have become firm believers in natural rubber mattresses. We still like our organic cotton futon as well as the spring mattress, but the natural rubber mattress is pretty hard to resist.

There are purity and labor concerns over rubber mattresses as many common harvest and production methods utilize child or underwaged labor and involve highly toxic chemicals in the processing. Customers who would like a natural mattress have come to us with these concerns, which prompted us to offer our natural rubber mattresses. Full disclosure of our low-impact, sustainable, fair, and pure harvest and production methods follow at the bottom of the page.

We start with a 6-inch core of the finest-grade firm natural rubber that provides superior pressure point-relieving support. Then we surround this core with quilted layers of organic cotton and cruelty-free wool from organically grown sheep for softness and more support and encase all in a silky 100% organic cotton fabric. The result is an organic mattress that is highly resilient and durable, capable of molding to your shape for sleeping comfort, night after night.

Overall height of our natural latex mattresses is approximately 6.5".

Features:

  • Extremely durable, flexible, and resilient -- the natural rubber Mattress moulds to your body.
  • Naturally resistant to moisture buildup.
  • Naturally antibacterial and hypo-allergenic (mildew, mold, and bacteria simply cannot survive in natural rubber).
  • Mold- and dust-free/
  • The cover is made from a silky 100% organic cotton fabric.
  • No movement is transmitted from one sleeper to the next. Ideal for the comfort and rest of two people of differing weights.
  • ILD (Indentation Load Deflection): 38-42.
  • A layer of pure wool from organically raised sheep acts as an effective fire retardant for your safety.

» More details on the manufacturing process of our natural rubber mattress:

We are aware that our customers must have choices. Growing sensitivities to the vast array of chemicals used in the manufacture of everyday items prevent more and more people from functioning in the chemical soup that surrounds us daily. Take cotton, for example: conventionally grown cotton used in most bedding relies heavily upon chemicals that leave toxins in the soil, water, and air, not to mention the toxic residues on the cotton fibers.

In an effort to preserve their own health, the health of their families, and the environmental health of the planet, many people are choosing a simpler, more natural way of life. The Euro-Luxury Collection is designed for those who wish to live in a cleaner, safer, environment, while enjoying a top quality, hand-made product. The materials we use are the finest nature can provide; certified organic and handpicked cotton, organic wool, and natural rubber.

Are you a sound sleeper, or do you sometimes suffer from sleeplessness, perhaps a sore back? Maybe a stiff neck keeps you awake. It could be that you have allergies or are sensitive to chemicals. Your bed and bedroom accessories play a major role in how well you sleep. An uncomfortable bed will cause you to have a poor night's sleep and since you will spend approximately 100 days there this year, it is not a piece of furniture to be taken lightly.

A growing number of people are sensitive to the chemicals used in the manufacture of everyday items. Traditional bedding contains synthetic materials and an abundance of chemicals such as formaldehyde and arsenic. This bedding off-gases harmful vapors throughout the night for years after your purchase and have been known to cause a wide variety of health problems such as asthma, sore backs, and multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS). With this in mind, the Euro-Luxury Collection by Rawganique was created using the purest natural materials found on Earth and by maintaining their purity throughout the manufacturing process.

Our concept is based on thorough and meticulous European research that proved that 100% natural materials provide you the best sleeping environment. Their elasticity and breathability, as well as their ability to regulate moisture and temperature, mean you get eight hours of good, restful sleep in a safe and healthy environment.

Our organic mattresses are made primarily from natural rubber—the most durable and elastic material available. A natural rubber core is ideal for mattresses: flexible yet stable, it is absorbent, resilient and provides excellent heat and moisture regulation and air circulation.

Natural rubber is a renewable resource. It is the milk or sap tapped from the Hevea Brasiliensis—the common rubber tree—grown on Malaysian plantations especially selected for their high quality product. Our supplier is located in an area that produces the finest quality rubber for mattress use: an extremely durable, elastic material characterized by its ability to retain its shape and original firmness. Because the product is manufactured where the sap is harvested, we are helping to sustain the local economy and provide jobs without depleting the natural resources of the country of origin.

An important element of our manufacturing process is that the processing of the Hevea milk is done close to the plantation. We do this because rubber destabilizes when it is kept in a liquid form for too long. This can be avoided by the addition of chemicals, but since we want our product as pure as possible, we cannot do this. For our natural rubber products, the milk is harvested in the morning and by afternoon it is being molded into sheets that are shipped to Canada where they are expertly covered at our facility.

We use the Dunlop system to produce a 97% pure rubber for our mattresses. This process involves air, natural soap and vulcanization agents, which are used to ensure the rubber keeps its form.

All Rawganique products—mattresses, foundations, pillows, comforters, and mattress protectors contain pure, organically grown and harvested cotton.

Cotton grown in industrialized countries is saturated with pesticides and herbicides and absorb all the chemicals that modern fertilizers deposit in the soil. Machine picked, it is full of impurities, oil, leaves, and dirt.

The cotton we use is cultivated and hand picked in the traditional co-operative manner that has been followed for centuries in the Cañete and Chincha valleys high in the Peruvian Andes. It is grown organically without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or defoliants to fertilize the crop, control plant growth or fight pests. No synthetic chemicals are used to strip the leaves in preparation for the harvest or during the manufacturing process. Hand picking ensures that it is the cleanest, purest most resilient cotton fiber available.

Europe's oldest and most prestigious certification agency KRAV of Sweden has certified our organic cotton. Their stamp of approval is not a guarantee of organic standards, but also that social rights are observed in the production of our cotton. All the organic cotton used in our batting, filling and fabrics is this clean, pure, organic product. It is woven to very high standards into the finest, softest fabrics, in Germany and Switzerland.

The wool in our products comes exclusively from Texel, an island off the coast of Holland.  It has a population of 13,300 people and over 100,000 sheep. The people of Texel have been raising sheep for over 600 years, and have developed a unique breed of sheep that is both hardy and produces wool of unrivalled quality.

Texel Sheep have adapted to a very windy and harsh environment to produce a unique, long wool fiber with a high crinkle factor and high natural lanolin content.  Products made from Texel wool are softer, thicker, warmer, and longer lasting. It is especially well suited to sleep products because of its superior durability, insulation, and moisture regulation.

Texel wool is harvested from a sustainable source without detriment or harm to the animal.  Each sheep is shorn every spring producing about 11lbs if high quality wool. The sheep are raised organically on a land that has never been used for agriculture and thus, has been protected from chemicals such as fertilizers and pesticides.

Using craftsmanship based on experience and environmental sensibility, the raw fleece is processed without the use of any dyes or bleaches. Bleached wool contains toxic compounds including highly toxic dioxin, something we all can do without. The wool is cleaned using a unique chemical free process that produces exceptionally clean wool, while retaining high natural lanolin content.

All wool used in our products must abide by strict requirements to be considered for use. In this way we are able to ensure the purity of our finished product.

Our wool must be free of any sort of plastic, baling twine, and mothballs. Fleece must be well skirted; no mat of hay, timothy heads, burrs, belly hair, manure, etc.

Processing is restricted, usual processes performed on wool are not allowed, such as;  (1) Carbonizing, a process which uses carbonic acid to dissolve chaff, (2) Shrink proofing, (3) Chemical scale removal, and (4) Moth proofing.  Any process that uses chemicals or produces toxins in the wool is strictly forbidden.

Finished batting can be washed with vegetable based soaps instead of chemical pesticides. All fiber lubrication, static control, or wetting agents are vegetable based and petroleum free. Finally, the wool must be stored in an unscented atmosphere.
