• How are these hemp futons different?
  
  The cover is 100% hemp and the fill/batting is 100% hemp. Very rare. Made in USA. Sweatshop-free. They are 3 inches thick, roughly the thickness of traditional Japanese futons.
  
  
• How do your hemp futons compare to your organic cotton futons and mattresses?
  
  They are a bit heavier in weight and pack down more than organic cotton overtime. They provide more insulation from below because hemp fiber's hollow core traps air, providing high insulation value.
  
  
• Who buys your hemp futons?
  
  Our hemp futons are created specifically for hemp purists who will not settle for anything less than 100% hemp. Most other people will be quite happy with our Economy Organic Cotton Futon (3") or Euro-Luxury Organic Cotton Futons (4.5" or 6"), which are every bit as practical and quite a bit cheaper in price.

  Yes. To minimize shipping costs & time, this item is made to order. On average, please allow 2 weeks for custom production and another 2 days – 2 weeks for delivery (depending on your location). Product is charged at time of ordering, and production begins as soon as we receive your order.

This pure 100% Hemp Futon is as sustainable as futons come. The batting is made from a very special process which turns the baste fibers from the hemp plant into a fluffy batting that is similar to fluffy cotton balls (see inset photo below). The cover is made from a hefty 100% hemp twill fabric that is lush, smooth, and durable.

Ours hemp futons are authentic Japanese futons...with a decidedly eco-friendly twist: they are made from 100% hemp cover & fill. For optimum comfort, purity, and support while you sleep, you can't beat our truly natural bedroom offerings.

In Japan, futons are traditionally made in 3" thickness from cotton batting and kept rolled up in the closet during the day & rolled out right on the tatami floor at night to sleep on.

This makes for an efficient use of living space (which is precious in most of Japan) and makes airing, sunning, moving, and storage very simple. We have ourselves found the 3" thickness to be ideal for sleeping right on the floor as well as easy to ship.

Customers preferring a thicker mattress for slatted futon frames or bed frames will do well with piling two 3" futons on top of each other, making for a thick and cozy 6" mattress which is still easy to air & sun (very important for keeping the futon fresh and clean) and economical to transport and store. Many of our customers get one 3" organic cotton or hemp futon and one 3" pure wool futon to get two kinds of support (organic cotton on top makes for a firm mattress, whereas wool on top makes for a plusher one). A mattress topper or mattress pad can be added on top of one or two futons for extra fluffiness.

Natural bedding materials (hemp, organic cotton, wool) are breathable and keep air circulating freely at all times, keeping you cozy and warm on chilly nights and cool on balmy nights. They are also indispensable for people with chemical sensitivity and allergies.

Organic cotton and Hemp:

• Settle down over time, providing a firm but "giving" support. The materials of choice for traditional Japanese futons and vegans everywhere. Ideal for layering and also as a stand-alone 3" futon on the floor as well as on the traditional Japanese tatami mat floor, solid platform beds, and slatted futon bed frames. Great for comforter filling too. The best natural materials for bedding (there is no off gassing as there is with synthetic bedding materials or even "natural" latex). 100% hemp batting especially makes for a wonderful comforter filling as its breathability and insulating qualities keep you very warm and cozy in the winter and cool in the summer.

Pure wool:

• Fluffy and full of loft. Ideal as a top layer but probably too soft for most people as a stand-alone 3" futon. Excellent material for comforter filling. Cruelty-free wool.

Hemp is a wonderful material for a mattress--it is durable, breathable, easy to grow without chemicals and pesticides, and naturally anti-bacterial & anti-fungal. The hemp fiber is hollow at the core, making for free air circulation, keeping you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The hemp batting (shown in inset photo above) packs down over time just like like cotton batting to provide a firm but "giving" support.

Hemp is easily grown in virtually any climate without chemicals or pesticides of any kind; in contrast, the conventional cotton plant alone accounts for 275 million pounds of annual pesticide use, not to mention millions more pounds of bleaches (one of whose byproducts is dioxin, the most toxic chemical/carcinogen known) and chemicals in the processing and manufacturing of conventional cotton products. As chemically sensitive people know, conventional cotton products may outgas toxic volatile substances for months or even years, giving rise to a host of allergies, chemical reactions, and long-term as well as acute health challenges.
